Measurement infrastructure is the foundation of all digital marketing, because platform automation learns from the conversion data it is taught. Double-counted forms, missed purchases or incorrectly fired events do not just distort the report — they teach the wrong lesson to systems such as Smart Bidding and Advantage+; the algorithm multiplies the action it mistakes for "success", while real sales fall behind.
In practice, the four measurement faults we see most often are:
The job of a professional setup is to prevent these faults from the start and, where they already exist, to find and clean them. The answer to how the measured data is then used on the Google Ads side is on our Google Ads management page; if the sale ends not on the site but on the phone or in the CRM, the continuation is offline conversion setup.
The diagram below summarises the structure we build: at the root, the data layer — the shared language between site and measurement; in the trunk, the GTM container; on the branches, the platform tags. New marketing tools attach to the existing tree as a branch in most cases, without adding new code to the site (if a new custom event is needed, a small addition to the data layer may be required) — a properly built GTM noticeably reduces the setup cost of tools added later. When the server-side scope is chosen, server-side tags such as the Meta Conversions API run through a separate server container fed by this tree.
Done properly, setup consists of 8 sequential steps; the order matters, because every tag added without a plan turns into technical debt that must be cleaned up later.
Needs are not the same in every business; we offer setup in 3 scopes. Which scope is required becomes clear in the first conversation, based on your traffic, advertising volume and sales model — the largest package is not right for every business, and we say so plainly.
| Scope | Contents | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Basic | GA4 + Google Ads conversions + Meta Pixel; standard event set | Businesses new to measurement with a single site |
| 2 — Advanced | + Meta Conversions API (server-side) + Enhanced Conversions + Consent Mode | Businesses with growing ad volume that want to reduce data loss |
| 3 — Expert | + Server-side GTM (hosted on Google Cloud or on our servers) | High-traffic e-commerce and multi-channel measurement needs |
In e-commerce setups the standard event set covers the full funnel — from PageView to Purchase on the Meta side and from page_view to purchase on the GA4 side (product view, add to cart, begin checkout, add payment info, purchase). Conversions and dynamic remarketing events are connected on the Google Ads side.
Browser-based measurement cannot see every user, because of ad blockers, cookie restrictions and browser policies. In a server-side setup, data goes to a server container under your control and is passed on to the platforms (for example the Meta Conversions API) from there; in a typical web setup the first signal still leaves the browser, but this architecture helps reduce the impact of browser restrictions and preserve data quality — there is no magic solution that eliminates loss entirely, and we do not promise one.
We offer 2 hosting routes: setup on your own account on Google Cloud Platform (the usage-based GCP fee — which varies with request volume, processing time and network traffic — is yours), or hosting on DijitalPi servers (a fixed annual fee on top of setup; covering up to 3 million requests per month). Which is more economical depends on your traffic; we calculate it with your figures in the first conversation.
Consent Mode configuration is a standard part of the advanced scope; but it does not on its own deliver legal compliance — it works alongside your consent management (CMP) and KVKK/GDPR processes. In basic mode, tags without consent are not run; in advanced mode, when consent is refused, cookieless, limited modelling signals may still go to Google. Which mode is used is decided together with your legal preferences.
Does GTM setup slow the site down? Every tag has a performance cost; the job of a proper setup is to keep that cost to a minimum. Gathering scattered codes that were added page by page into a single container improves the loading order on most sites; not adding unnecessary tags and binding tags to the correct trigger are also part of this discipline. A bad setup — unnecessary tags firing on every page — damages both speed and data; that is exactly why the test-and-verify step exists.
Do you carry out setup on Shopify or on my custom-built site? Yes. We carry out setups on common e-commerce platforms including Shopify, and on custom-built sites. For custom events requiring a data layer we deliver a ready template to your developer; if you do not have a developer, in most cases we complete the setup ourselves with panel access.
Why do the sales on my site not match the conversion numbers in the ad dashboard? The three most common reasons: missing or incorrect placement of the tracking code, cookie blocking and browser restrictions, and platforms defining a conversion differently (cookie lifetime, attribution window, session definition). Our setup audit first diagnoses the source of the gap; the gap cannot be eliminated entirely, but it can be made explainable and manageable.
What do I lose if I do not set up the Meta Conversions API? You will not see, in Meta’s reports, a portion of the conversions from users affected by browser restrictions (particularly consent changes on the iOS side); this weakens your remarketing audiences and campaign optimisation. CAPI helps reduce that loss by passing conversion data from the server.
How long does setup take? It depends on the site structure and the number of events to be tracked: a few hours on simple sites, a few days on e-commerce projects. Server-side setups are planned together with server preparation. The exact duration becomes clear after the needs analysis.
My sale is completed on the phone or in store — does GTM measure that? GTM measures interaction on the site; connecting a sale completed off-site back to the ad is a separate setup. We describe feeding the "closed won" status from your CRM back into Google Ads in our offline conversion setup service — the two setups together form the full measurement chain from click to real revenue.
If you have an existing setup, let us identify double counting, missing events and incorrect triggers together; if you do not, let us build a measurement plan suited to your business from scratch. The review is not a sales pitch but an honest photograph of your measurement infrastructure. DijitalPi is an agency with 20+ years of marketing experience that has run campaigns in 125 countries and 15 languages and holds the 2019 Stevie Awards "Best in Europe" title — we treat measurement as the foundation of advertising, not its decoration.
