The Differences Between SEO, AEO and GEO
A quick summary with AI
You can have this content summarised by the AI of your choice, or copy the prompt.

SEO, AEO and GEO apply the same underlying goal, discoverability, to three different surfaces. Search Engine Optimisation aims to earn positions in conventional search results. Answer Engine Optimisation aims to be selected for direct answers, including featured snippets and voice assistants. Generative Engine Optimisation aims to earn citations in answers written by systems such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

Summary: For most brands the answer is all three, with different priorities. SEO remains an important traffic source and the foundation for the other two. AEO adds visibility in answers that may require no click. GEO brings your brand into the response when someone asks an AI system. The comparison and business scenarios below help you decide where to focus your resources.

Brief Definitions: SEO, AEO and GEO

The shared goal is to make your content discoverable. What changes is who finds it and where it appears. SEO addresses search crawlers and ranking systems; AEO addresses systems that select answers; GEO addresses language models that compose them. These definitions are deliberately brief. Each concept has its own detailed guide.

SEO: Search Engine Optimisation

SEO combines technical work, content and authority building to improve a website's organic visibility on search engines such as Google and Bing. Keyword research, site speed, internal linking, backlinks and evidence of experience and expertise all belong to this discipline. With more than two decades of practice behind it, it is the most established of the three and has the clearest measurement conventions. See our SEO services for the practical scope.

AEO: Answer Engine Optimisation

AEO makes content suitable for selection on direct-answer surfaces: featured snippets, People Also Ask and voice responses. Question-led headings and concise, self-contained answers are common techniques. A 40–60-word opening answer is a useful editorial convention, not a platform requirement. FAQPage markup can describe relevant content, but it should not be treated as a promise of a rich result. Google does not require special schema for its AI features. The main value is the answer itself and the way it is structured. A user may see it without visiting your site, so visibility and traffic are different outcomes. Read what AEO means.

GEO: Generative Engine Optimisation

GEO aims to have your organisation cited or mentioned in answers written by generative systems, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews. Useful practices include information-rich passages, traceable sources, clear definitions and dated evidence. The optional llms.txt proposal is inexpensive to implement, but its adoption and effect should not be assumed. GEO is the youngest discipline here, and its measurement conventions are still developing. Read what GEO means.

The Main Comparison

Five dimensions make the differences easier to assess: platform, unit of optimisation, success measure, techniques and time horizon. One piece of content can qualify for all three surfaces, but success means something different on each.

Target platformGoogle and Bing organic resultsFeatured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistantsChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews
Unit of optimisationA page or URL, supported by the whole siteA question-and-answer passageA citable knowledge fragment
Success measureRankings, organic clicks and conversionsAnswer ownership and visibility without a clickCitation or mention share in sampled answers
Main techniquesKeywords, technical SEO, internal links and backlinksQuestion headings, direct answers and useful FAQs; 40–60 words is a common conventionSourced statistics, quotations, definitions and freshness; llms.txt is optional
Time horizon: observation, not a commitmentMedium to long term, usually months; benefits can accumulateShort to medium term; existing visibility may support answer selectionVariable: weeks for narrow topics, potentially months for broad competition

The smaller the unit being selected, the more disciplined the writing needs to be. SEO works at page level. AEO may depend on one paragraph. GEO may depend on one sentence or data point being useful enough to cite. These are additional demands on a page's structure, rather than reasons to abandon SEO.

Measurement also needs care. Search Console provides clicks for search performance. The question “How often do AI answers cite us?” usually requires repeated sampling. There is no single universal dashboard that provides a complete answer across every generative engine.

What Do They Share?

All three depend on accurate, well-sourced, clearly structured content and a technically healthy website. A site that performs well in one discipline is therefore not starting from zero in the others. Much of the investment in content and infrastructure serves all three.

  • Reliable original content: invented information damages trust wherever it appears. Give readers something they can verify and use, rather than repeating unsupported claims.
  • Evidence of experience and expertise: identify authors, show relevant experience and make organisational responsibility clear. These help people assess a source instead of asking them to trust an anonymous assertion.
  • Structured data: Article and Organization markup clarify entities and eligible content types. Google says its AI features do not require special schema. Markup supports the content; it does not replace it.
  • Technical health: accessible HTML, crawlability, usable performance and a working sitemap support discovery. The relevant crawler varies by engine, but a system that cannot access your content has much less opportunity to use it.

The practical implication is that you do not need a separate article for SEO and another for GEO. A well-designed page can be a candidate for all three surfaces.

Where Do They Differ?

The clearest differences concern distribution, measurement and writing format. These explain why teams may need distinct work plans even when the underlying content is shared.

Distribution: In conventional search, users choose a page from a list. An answer surface selects a small number of responses, although People Also Ask can display several sources. A generative system composes an answer using multiple inputs and may include your organisation as a citation or mention. Competition moves from a place among ten blue links towards inclusion within an answer.

Measurement: SEO has established position and click metrics. AEO can track snippet ownership, but the contribution of visibility without a click to eventual conversions is harder to isolate. GEO commonly uses a representative question set, repeated on selected engines, to count citations and mentions. The Princeton-led GEO study presented at KDD 2024 used a 10,000-query benchmark and reported visibility improvements of up to 40% for some techniques, including adding sources, quotations and statistics. That experimental result is not a promised uplift for a commercial website.

Writing format: SEO needs a page that satisfies the topic and intent. AEO benefits from a direct answer immediately below a question. GEO benefits from information that remains intelligible when cited: definitions, sourced figures, comparisons and dated evidence. These can coexist on one page, provided the structure is planned deliberately.

Priorities for Your Business

The appropriate weighting depends on the business model. The following four scenarios are starting points, not fixed budget formulas. Adjust them to your present visibility, competition and the way your audience researches purchases.

SEO remains relevant in every scenario. Accessible, credible content is the raw material for these surfaces. Google's AI features build on its search infrastructure. Other engines use different crawlers, indexes or partners, so their selection processes are not identical. The common requirement is useful content that machines can access and readers can trust. Treating GEO as a shortcut around a weak website leaves the underlying problem unresolved.

An Integrated Strategy

Separate teams producing separate versions of the same article can add cost without adding value. DijitalPi uses one content workflow with several layers: evidence-led topic selection, a sound search structure, direct answers to important questions and information that can be cited accurately.

Plan the keyword and intent target, each section's answer, and the supporting sources together. Then track three views of performance: rankings and clicks, answer-surface ownership, and citation share in sampled AI answers. A strong SEO report can otherwise hide weak AI visibility, just as a few AI mentions can distract from falling commercial traffic. Monitoring them together helps direct effort towards the actual weakness.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO dying?

No. Google's AI features use search infrastructure, and other answer systems also depend on accessible web information through their indexes or partners. Visibility is spreading across more surfaces. That changes the scope of the work rather than eliminating the need for SEO.

Are GEO and AEO the same?

They overlap, but their objectives differ. AEO aims for an existing passage to be selected as an answer. GEO aims for your information or brand to be cited in a newly composed response. Question-and-answer structure supports both, while GEO also emphasises sourced, independently understandable information.

Which should I invest in first?

Start with SEO if the site has technical problems or little organic visibility. An already visible site may find useful AEO opportunities in existing content. Give GEO greater priority when your audience actively uses AI tools to research products and suppliers.

Can AEO and GEO results be measured?

Yes, with limitations. Track snippet ownership for AEO and use a repeatable question set for GEO. Record the engine, date and whether the brand was mentioned or cited. Consistency in the sample is necessary to interpret trends; one favourable answer is not evidence of broad visibility.

Can a small business work on all three?

Yes. One substantial page with clear question headings, direct answers, sourced evidence and appropriate markup can serve all three. Small teams can improve each piece of content instead of creating three independent publishing programmes.
