Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of organising website content and technical access so that answer systems can understand and cite it. The term covers direct-answer surfaces and is also widely used for AI answers from systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Microsoft Copilot. It extends the familiar goal of appearing in search results towards becoming a source within the answer itself. When a user receives a synthesised response instead of browsing a list of links, presence in that response becomes another form of visibility.
Summary: AEO combines question-led headings, direct answers, useful FAQs, appropriate structured data, consistent organisation information and a deliberate crawler-access policy. Bing visibility deserves attention for Copilot, while other engines have their own crawlers and search partners. Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow are often overlooked in the sites we review. Our observations suggest opportunities in Turkish content and technical preparation, but these are qualitative audit findings, not a market-wide ranking guarantee.
What Are Answer Engines?
An answer engine responds directly to a question instead of merely providing a list of links. Generative systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot fit this description, but featured snippets and voice assistants have served related needs for years. AEO is therefore an evolution of answer-focused publishing rather than a discipline invented from nothing.
Different products use different combinations of indexes, crawlers and partners. The following table is a practical orientation, not a complete description of proprietary ranking systems.
| Answer surface | Relevant information access | Practical focus |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews | Google search infrastructure and Gemini models | Search eligibility, useful content, accurate context and maintenance |
| ChatGPT web search | OAI-SearchBot and search partners | Relevant crawler access and clear, citable answers |
| Perplexity | PerplexityBot and search partners | Readable pages and access for its search crawler |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing search infrastructure | Bing Webmaster Tools, indexing checks and appropriate IndexNow notifications |
| Gemini | Google-connected information sources, depending on the feature | Clear entities and consistent, machine-readable information |
| Voice assistants, including Siri and Alexa | Product-specific search partners and answer sources | Short answers that remain understandable when read aloud |
| Featured snippets | Google's search index | Useful question-and-answer passages; 40–60 words is a common writing convention |
Bing should not be ignored simply because Google dominates an organisation's existing search reports. Copilot makes Bing-related discovery relevant. Perplexity has its own crawler, so its access requirements should be assessed separately rather than assuming Bing is its only source.
IndexNow is an open protocol for notifying participating engines, including Bing and Yandex, about changed URLs. Notifications are not a guarantee of indexing or citation. Combined with a verified webmaster account and inspection of important pages, they provide a practical way to address a technical gap that we frequently find in Turkish website audits.
How Do You Optimise for Answer Engines?
The central idea is to make important information understandable as an answer: a meaningful heading, a self-contained response and supporting detail that can be checked. Technical access and appropriate markup support that structure. Six practices form a useful starting framework.
1. Use question-led headings. People often ask longer, natural-language questions when using assistants. Headings such as “What is X?”, “How does X work?” and “How do X and Y differ?” help define a section's purpose. Use real audience questions rather than generating many nearly identical keyword variations.
2. Answer directly at the start. Put the response immediately below the question, then explain the conditions and evidence. A 40–60-word paragraph can be a useful target for a simple question, but answer length should follow the subject. A sentence such as “We will explore this below” delays the useful information. A passage should still make sense when read without the entire article.
3. Include genuine FAQs and appropriate FAQPage markup. A useful FAQ addresses questions the main discussion has not resolved clearly enough. It can make several answers accessible on one page. Rich-result availability is a separate matter: Google restricted FAQ rich results in August 2023, and eligibility and presentation can change further. Do not sell FAQ markup as a promise of an expanded Google result. FAQPage remains a schema.org type, while Google states that AI features do not require special schema. The primary benefit is clear, relevant answer content.
4. Clarify the entity behind the content. Readers need to know who is making a claim. Consistent organisation names, addresses, contact information, author pages and appropriate Organization or Person markup establish that context. Use sameAs for profiles that genuinely identify the same entity. Consistency is more useful than a collection of unsupported credentials or unrelated profile links.
5. Set a deliberate crawler-access policy. Distinguish search access from model-training preferences. OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot concern search discovery; GPTBot has a different purpose. Google-Extended is a separate product control and blocking it does not itself block Google Search or AI Overviews. Check each provider's documentation and avoid accidental restrictions on the search surfaces where you want visibility.
The llms.txt proposal, introduced in 2024, offers a concise map to useful content for language-model-oriented readers. It is optional. Major search systems have not established it as a universal ranking requirement, and it should not be treated as a substitute for HTML, links, sitemaps or crawler access. It may be inexpensive to maintain, but its benefit should be evaluated honestly.
6. Keep dates and information accurate. Maintain genuine publication and modification dates, including appropriate dateModified values. Review old figures, screenshots and recommendations. Changing a date without updating the underlying information does not make a page current.
How AEO Relates to SEO and GEO
AEO builds on sound search fundamentals. Technical barriers and weak content do not disappear because the target is an answer rather than a conventional result. GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation, focuses more specifically on citations and mentions within newly composed responses. Our GEO guide explains that scope.
Industry terminology overlaps, and AEO is sometimes used broadly enough to include generative answers. The operational question is which surface you are targeting and how success will be measured. For a side-by-side comparison and business priorities, see the differences between SEO, AEO and GEO.
The AEO Opportunity in Turkey
In our audits, well-structured Turkish answers and explicit technical policies remain uneven. This creates opportunities for publishers that can provide useful, attributable information. It does not establish that every niche has low competition or that Turkish content automatically receives preferential treatment.
Common gaps include incomplete structured data, accidental crawler restrictions, absent Bing verification and no process for notifying participating engines of important changes. An absent llms.txt file is a different kind of observation: because the format is optional, its absence is not itself an SEO error. Prioritise proven access and content problems before optional files.
Expectations should vary by query. A narrow local topic may be easier to address than a broad competitive question. Building authority and demonstrating sustained usefulness can take months. Track narrow and broad query groups separately so an early gain in one does not conceal a lack of progress in the other. AEO is an ongoing content and technical programme, not a one-time switch.
