The Customer Journey: Stages, Mapping and Examples

The customer journey is a process covering every stage in which a customer interacts with a product or service. It runs from the customer's awareness stage through purchase and on to the loyalty stages that follow. Understanding and mapping the customer journey correctly helps businesses improve customer experience and increase customer satisfaction.

The Stages of the Customer Journey

The customer journey generally consists of five main stages:

1. Awareness

At this stage the customer becomes aware of a need or a problem and starts looking for a solution. Businesses use various marketing strategies to reach potential customers at this stage.

2. Consideration

After the awareness stage the customer researches and compares different products and services. Customer reviews, product reviews and comparison sites play an important role at this stage.

3. Purchase

After the consideration stage the customer selects the most suitable solution and completes the purchase. Offering a user-friendly website and easy payment options matters at this stage.

4. Experience

Once the purchase is complete the customer starts using the product or service. The quality of the product and the customer service experience matter a great deal at this stage.

5. Loyalty

When the customer is satisfied with the product or service they tend to buy again and stay loyal to the brand. Loyalty programmes and personalised offers can be effective at this stage.

Customer Journey Mapping

Customer journey mapping is the process of visualising all the touchpoints and experiences through which customers interact with a product or service. These maps help businesses understand and improve customer experience.

How Do You Build a Customer Journey Map?

  1. Build customer profiles: Build customer profiles or "personas" in order to understand your audience.
  2. Identify the touchpoints: Identify all the touchpoints where customers interact with the product or service.
  3. Map the experiences: Map the experiences and emotions customers have at each touchpoint.
  4. Identify areas for improvement: Identify the areas of the customer journey that need improving and develop strategies.
