What is anchor text? Anchor text is the clickable link text — the wording a hyperlink is attached to.

Definition: a link given to a word or group of words inside a piece of text.

Example: when we say "you can learn what anchor text is from this page", we mean the link we have given.

What is in this article?

Why Does Anchor Text Matter?

By linking with anchor text you help make your site more SEO-friendly. Links given from one website to yours, or the other way round, mean Google sees it as a recommended site that provides value to users. That signals to Google's bots that the site is perceived as quality in the eyes of users.

As long as it is used correctly and not overdone, your chances of ranking higher in search results increase. Otherwise you may receive a penalty from Google.

When using anchor text, you should give links without overdoing it, asking: does this link provide value to my visitor?

For example, suppose we have an article titled "What Is an SEO-Friendly URL?". Whenever the phrase "SEO-friendly URL" appears in any of our articles, the links you give meaning "you can click here for detailed information" are quite valuable as long as they are not overdone.
